It seems every romance novelist at one point in her career will write a bridal series. I mean, how better to show a happily ever after ending than with a wedding, right? A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN is my contribution to the wedding tropes of the romance genre and book 1 in the series, DEARLY BELOVED, is on sale right now, just in time for wedding and beach reading seasons.

Tell us a little about Dearly Beloved.

Colleen O’Dowd manages a thriving bridal business with her sisters in Heaven, New Hampshire. After fleeing Manhattan and her cheating ex-fiancé, Colleen still believes in happily ever afters. But with a demanding business to run, her sisters to look after, and their 93-year-old grandmother to keep out of trouble, she’s worried she’ll never find Mr. Right.

Playboy Slade Harrington doesn’t believe in marriage. His father’s six weddings have taught him life is better as an unencumbered single guy. But Slade loves his little sister. He’ll do anything for her, including footing the bill for her dream wedding. He doesn’t plan on losing his heart to a smart-mouthed, gorgeous wedding planner, though.

When her ex-fiancé comes back into the picture, Colleen must choose between Mr. Right and Mr. Right Now.

Peak between the pages of Dearly Beloved:

“So, this is a pig roast.”

I slanted a look at Slade. “Is that a question or a statement?”

He turned from where he’d been staring at the spit holding the two-hundred-pound wedding dinner for the fifty quests, a sheepish grin on his face.

“A little of both, maybe?”

I shook my head, realizing it was impossible to stay upset with him for very long. He’d been an absolute Godsend pre-ceremony, helping Kolby install the one-hundred-foot runner from the cabin to the gazebo. He’d wiped down the chairs that were still damp from the early morning lake-mist condensation and had even climbed up to the top of the gazebo to help drape the flowers for a suddenly height-frightened Charity. I knew what she was doing, of course. Charity has never been afraid of anything in her life, but seeing Slade climb his way up to, and then dangle from, the roof to hang the flowers was an eye-opener she couldn’t miss.

Me, either.

He’d done as I’d asked and stayed on the sidelines during the ceremony, which my sister Cathleen officiated at, and then had helped round everyone up for pictures at the lake. He’d even been helpful corralling the guests into their cars and trucks to shuttle them back to the Gunderson’s farm for the reception.

So far he’d stuck by my side as we watched the bridal party dance their little hearts out in the barn, listened to the good-natured toasts and the ribald ones, too, of the best man and maid of honor, and had wheeled Kimmy’s one-hundred-and-three-year-old great-grandmother to her place of honor at the head table.

If I didn’t know he already ruled a financial empire, I’d be tempted to give him a second job on the weekends as an event assistant.

“Oh, Colleen, I can’t thank you enough,” Kimmy Schmidt, nee Gunderson, told me as she pulled me into a hug. She had always been an enthusiastic hugger, clamping her body fully against whomever she was wrapped around, but before the added eight-month pregnancy belly, it had been easier to hug her back. Now, I couldn’t get my arms even halfway around her midsection and I was afraid all her vigorous body bumping was harmful to the baby.

Kimmy had no such concerns.

“Everything was perfect. Abso perfection. Your team is simply the ultimate best.”

One of Kimmy’s endearing traits? She loved to speak in absolutes.

“Uncle Pecker said the pig is almost ready. You’re staying for supper, right?”

“I can’t, Kimmy, I’m sorry. I’ve got a thousand things to do before tomorrow, but Charity and Kolby are staying. Kolby will keep taking pictures and candids until the end, and anything you need or want, or any problems that pop up, Charity can take care of. But don’t worry, because there will be no problems.”

Kimmy yanked me in for another squeeze. It was a good thing I hadn’t drunk anything all afternoon, because I could feel my bladder knock against my intestines with the force of this one. “Of course there won’t be any problems. Look who my wedding planner is.”

Her father called her name from across the field and with one more hug and a quick kiss to my cheek, she waddled across the freshly mown cornfield to him.

“Uncle Pecker?” Slade said, dangerously close to my ear. So close, his breath warmed over my entire neck. Before I did something stupid like turn around and pull him into a Kimmy-worthy embrace, I took a few steps forward and away from him and his hot—and by hot, I mean wowza!—breath.

“His given name is Woodrow. It’s his father’s name as well, and one Woody in the family was, I guess, enough.”

It took him a moment. I could see when the dawn broke by the way his sexy eyes widened and his mouth opened for a second.

“And you had the nerve to make fun of Bunny,” he said. “Being nicknamed after a rabbit, I have to think, is much more preferable to being referred to as a woodpecker.”

“Maybe. But both names are pretty awful.”

“Yes, they are.”

“I need a minute to let Charity and Kolby know I’m leaving, then we can go.”
How he finagled it so he drove out to the farm in my car, I still didn’t know. But I was, for all intents and purposes, his ride.

Once I’d made sure my two assistants were set, Slade and I headed back into town.

“I assumed you stayed for the entire reception,” Slade said.

“I usually do, if for no other reason than to ensure if any problems arise I can be the fixer and not have to worry the bridal party or the parents.”

“So how come we didn’t stay?”

“First, trust me when I tell you there will be no problems. And if any arise, they’re going to be family and alcohol-related, so Kimmy’s parents will take care of it. And believe me, they will do a much better job than I would. Nobody messes with Grover Gunderson and walks away unscathed.”

I slid a sideglance to him. My heart sped up a little at the sight of his smile.

“Is he related to Uncle Woodrow?”

“Brothers.”

“Their mother must have had a thing for presidents.”

I nodded. “She did. You didn’t meet uncles Calvin and Millard.”

His free and easy laugh tickled all the way down my spine.

“What’s the second reason?”

“I need to get to the church. I’ve got a rehearsal for tomorrow’s wedding scheduled, and Maureen is doing the rehearsal dinner back at the inn.”

The car grew quiet as I drove. I had fifteen things running through my head about tomorrow’s nuptials, an equal number concerning Nanny Fee and the talk I’d had with my sisters the night before, and then even more thoughts revolving around my work schedule for the week.

“What are you doing after that?”

“Making sure everything is set for the wedding. I’ve got a list of things to double check back at the house, and I need to make some calls to verify times. I should have done it all yesterday, but as you’re well aware, time got away from me. Why?”

All those important thoughts flew out the car window when Slade said, “Have dinner with me.”

“What?”

“You heard me.” He turned his body a bit so he was almost facing me. The penetrating scrutiny of his gaze sliced right through me. “I’ve been with you all day, Colleen. You didn’t stop once to eat or even have a drink of water. You’ve been in constant motion since I arrived at the lake, and that was at nine o’clock. Charity said you’d all been there since seven thirty, setting up. You’ve got to be hungry by now because I know I am. Starving, in fact.”

The thought of sharing a meal alone with him was too intimate, too unsettling for me to consider. Yesterday’s stop for a quick slice of pizza aside, the last time I’d dined with him I’d ruined his suit and he’d been privy to a scene with Vlad I didn’t want to think about again.

Ever.

Interview Diane Scott Lewis Author of Beyond the Fall

Have I got a treat for you today.  Beyond the Fall by Diane Scott Lewis is on sale for 99 cents!  WOW!  Give a warm welcome to Diane.  Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Diane and Beyond the Fall!

Why should we read this book/series and what sets you apart from the rest and makes your book/series unique?

I write historical fiction, but I try to make my stories non-fluffy, more serious, but still with humor when necessary, of course. I research carefully to get the details right. Obviously, for BEYOND THE FALL I couldn’t research time-travel, I wish I could, but I tried to make it as realistic as possible in my heroine’s reaction to being thrown back two-hundred years. Such as, how would I react to such an unbelievable event and how would I cope. How would the people treat me when I’d be so different, much more outspoken and bold?

You’ve got a time machine, a cloak of invisibility, and one hour. Where would you go, and what eavesdropping would you do?

Since I usually write about the eighteenth century, I’d like to zip back to that era, in England, and live for a few days with the common people. What are their speech patterns, swear words, etc.? It’s fine to research but to really be there, dress like them, prepare food, shop, would be a boon. I’d listen to how they felt about their lot, the government, life in general. Then I’d want to come home, because as a modern person I love my clean, hot water, and electricity.

Do you see yourself in your characters?

Yes, my female characters are usually smart-mouthed and dry-witted, stubborn and bold, no matter what era they’re in. I do try to work within the limitations that women had in the eighteenth century. And contrary to popular belief, there were many strong women with feminist ideals in the past.

How long have you been writing?

I started telling stories at age five. I’d illustrate them and tell my mother what to write for a caption. I wrote my first novel at age ten, an historical novel set in ancient Egypt. It wasn’t until 1995 that I seriously began my first full-length novel set in eighteenth-century Cornwall, England. In those pre-internet days, I researched at the Library of Congress; a fantastic resource.

Tell us a little about Beyond the Fall!

In 2018, Tamara is dumped by her arrogant husband, travels to Cornwall, England and researches her ancestors. In a neglected cemetery, she scrapes two fallen headstones together trying to read the one beneath, faints, and wakes up in 1789, the year of The French Revolution, and grain riots in England. Young Farmer Colum Polwhele comes to her aid. Can a sassy San Francisco gal survive in this primitive time and fall for Colum, a man active in underhanded dealings or will she struggle to return to her own time?

A peek between the page of Beyond the Fall:

Had she fainted in the churchyard? Tamara strained to sit upright. Rolling her shoulders, she glanced around in embarrassment, relieved to see no one. She’d never fainted before.

The headstones beside her were no longer lying on the ground but standing straight up, the inscriptions clear. They both said Trembeth with death dates in the late-middle eighteenth century. The stones appeared in remarkably good condition. How was that possible? Maybe she’d crawled elsewhere in her daze, around a corner in the cemetery and these were replacements for other Trembeth headstones.

“Very, very weird.” Tamara groaned and staggered to her feet, then brushed off grass and leaves. Her head ached worse, but she wanted to write down the names and dates of what could be her ancestors. She fumbled in her coat pocket for the pencil and notepad. After scribbling the info, she weaved toward a low stone wall she didn’t recall from before and tried to blink away her fugue. She must have hit her head when she fainted.

As she glanced up, she nearly jumped. The church behind the man was no longer crumbling, or fallen in on one side, but looked neat and all in one piece. The now intact windows winked in the sunlight, the ivy not so abundant. She couldn’t have crawled in a funk all the way to another church.
