An impromptu assignment for a Scottish Warrior Angel and a Native American shapeshifter from present day, must time travel to 1878 in an effort to unravel a dangerous mystery

A little about An Angel’s Wylder Assignment:

Warrior Angel Killian Dugan’s annual trip to the family castle in Scotland is shattered by the arrival of Legion Commander North. Killian’s skills are needed for an urgent time travel assignment. A rogue demon has escaped back in time. He must discover the why and where and stop the demon before it can damage the past and change the future.

Killian’s girlfriend Chinoah Grace, a Native American shapeshifter is included in the mission which takes them to the wild west town of Wylder, Wyoming in the year 1878. She will have her hands full fitting in and making friends.

Nothing is as it seems.  They encounter visions, spirit quests, and a mysterious shaman.  On top of it all, blending in as a blacksmith is more physically difficult than he imagined. But not as challenging as keeping his hands off his undercover wife. Will they complete their assignment or run out of time?

A new peek between the pages of An Angel’s Wylder Assignment:

He turned his attention out the window where the snow swirled in the howling wind. “Besides, who in bloody hell would be calling at this time of night and in this weather?”

She raised an eyebrow and shrugged. “Only one group of individuals I know.”

“Oh, no. I’m on leave. They didn’t know where I was going. Besides, they wouldn’t expect me to be here.” The ancient wooden door groaned then made a squeeing sound when Killian yanked it open. “What in tarnation are you doing here?”

Chinoah stood on tiptoe and stepped to the side to see who was at the door. “Angels always know. At least that’s what you tell me,” she whispered against his ear.

He shot her a warning glance and turned his attention to the situation at hand.

“Nice to see you too.” Warrior Legion Commander Nathanial North stood on the stoop with Sean, two of his warrior angels, and Caden, who was now a liaison to the legion rather than a warrior, due to injuries.

At first, Killian held tight to the door. “So am I to assume this is not a social visit?” Large wet snowflakes swirled around the visitors and into the doorway.

“If you let us in, I’ll tell you the reason for our visit.”  Nat glanced up at the snow drifting over his warriors.

“Oh, of course.” He grudgingly stepped back, gently moving Chinoah over, and allowed the warriors to enter. “Can I get you something? Coffee?”

“I’ve cinnamon rolls frozen. Only take a few minutes to thaw and warm them up?” Chinoah offered, turning toward the kitchen.

“We’d appreciate your offerings. It’s damn cold out there.” Nat extended his hand.

He hesitantly took his offered hand. “Don’t make me sorry I let you guys in. I’m on holiday for part of November and the entire month of December.  Planning on spending the holidays with my cousin and his family.”

Nat frowned and pursed his lips. “You may have to adjust your plans.”

“Aww shit. I knew it. The problem is that my cousin won’t be back for three weeks. I promised to take care of the castle while he’s gone. It’s an arrangement we have every year. Lowers my stress and keeps me from ending up like Caden.” He couldn’t help adding the little jab. Caden was a liaison to the legion due to what boiled down to PTSD angel style during a dark demon battle.

“This year I was planning on spending the holidays with Tavish’s family.” Killian reluctantly motioned the group of men to have a seat in the room facing the huge stone fireplace. “Can’t it wait until after the holidays?”

“I’m afraid not. Caden and Mystic have offered to take your place here at your cousin’s home. Your assignment can’t wait.” Nat grimaced.

He huffed out a breath. “How bad is it?”

Three Widows of Wylder by Julie Howard

Give a Spooktacular welcome to Julie Howard, author of Three Widows of Wylder, part of the wildly popular Wylder West Series. Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cauldron. Take your choice of a bat wing Chocolate Chip or Pumpkin, or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Judy and her Three Widows of Wylder.

Okay Julie, what was the hardest decision you ever made?

To go back to work after I had children. I loved my job but was so torn about leaving my kids in someone else’s care. I ended up quitting that job three different times to stay home with my children for a while. It was a stretch financially but we made it work. My employer was soooo patient with me and always took me back.

Who would you recommend this book to and what should readers be aware of before reading it?

This has appeal to lovers of historical fiction, those interested in the American Old West, and women who enjoy stories about strong women who overcome the odds. There is a dark theme in this story – each woman has a terrible secret in her past. This isn’t a light read, though there’s plenty of humor, but it is a story of redemption and survival.

What inspired you to write?

I’m inspired by all the wonderful books I’ve enjoyed over the years. I always wanted to be a writer too and create stories others would enjoy. Books are a gift – I so appreciate the wonderful authors out there who have produced their stories.

Do you see yourself in your characters?

There’s a bit of me in all my characters, even the bad ones. I’m not sure how it could be otherwise. I don’t mean I’ve done the things my characters have, but I can dig deep and find a glimmer of understanding how a character might react a certain way. I try to get inside their mind (strange, because they are literally in my mind) and become them while I’m writing their scenes.

Tell us three things we’d find if we looked under your heroine’s bed?

Great question! I have three main characters. There wouldn’t be anything under Clara’s bed as she’s an impeccable housewife. Mary Rose will have an old corset, a boxful of ribbons, two pairs of knickers, five pairs of shoes and a box of stale candy under hers. Emma will store several rabbit snares under her bed, along with a bag of marbles she won five years ago from a boy in a bet at school.

Now tell us a little about Three Widows of Wylder.

After the death of her husband, Clara flees a hanging judge and seeks refuge with her brother in Wylder, Wyoming.

With secrets of her own and good reasons to flee, spoiled and vain Mary Rose joins Clara on the trek to Wyoming. Surely a suitable man exists somewhere.

Emma is a mystery. A crack shot and expert horsewoman, her harrowing past seeps out in a steady drip. She’s on the run from something, but what?

After the three women descend on Wylder, a budding romance leads to exposure of their pasts. As disaster looms, will any of them escape?

Sneak peek between the pages of Three Widows of Wyyder.

Emma stood, legs apart, one hand on the pistol at her hip. The covered wagon was the type used years ago by pioneers, before trains tamed the prairie, and they still lumbered across areas where tracks hadn’t been laid. Two women sat side-by-side, too focused on their argument to yet notice the camp they entered. Their one horse, overmatched by the heavy wagon, was damp with sweat, its mouth flecked with froth.

“We should have stayed on the main road.” The peevish one appeared much younger, curly gold hair topped by a large straw hat. She wore a light-yellow dress with lace at her wrists and throat, a perfectly inadequate outfit for travel. “Someone could have provided directions.”

The older woman had finely-drawn features, a few strands of gray threaded through her dark, uncovered hair. Dressed in sensible blue calico, she gripped the reins too tight and the poor horse gave a pathetic shake of its head. “The whole point was to avoid people,” she sniped.

Emma strode forward and seized the reins. “For God’s sake, you’re killing him.”

The two women gaped as though at an apparition. The horse, released from harsh hands, lowered its head and halted. Its sides heaved as flies drank at its sweaty flanks.

“Whomever let you two fools handle a horse should be whipped.” Tempted to dispatch the women to hell for their cruelty, Emma rested her hand on the pistol’s handle.

They two travelers spoke in tandem. “Who are you?” and “How dare you call me a fool.”

As Emma crooned into in the horse’s ear, her expert fingers undid the buckles at its shoulders and haunches. By the time the older of the two women climbed to the ground, the horse was unhitched and Emma led it to the creek.

“That’s our horse,” cried the one in yellow. “Clara, what is that insane girl doing? She’s stealing him.”

Emma halted, shoulders stiff. She turned and pointed the pistol at the one with lace at her throat. “I’m no horse thief.” She cocked the hammer. “Apologize.”

Magnar by Mary Morgan

Give a warm welcome to Mary Morgan, author of Magnar, book one in The Wolves of Clan Sutherland, just released on August 26, 2020.  Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Mary and  Magnar leader of the Wolves of Clan Sutherland.

Hello Tena! I’m delighted to be on your blog today! I’m excited to share my new release, Magnar, The Wolves of Clan Sutherland, Book 1 with your readers. Yet first, I’d like to introduce you to the Norse and Scottish men who are rumored to be part wolf. They are the elite guard for King William of Scotland. Their bloodline flows with the magic from these countries, which gives them unique qualities.

Meet the Wolves of Clan Sutherland!

Magnar ~ The Barbarian. As leader of the Wolves of Clan Sutherland, Magnar is a fierce ruler for those under his command. Beware if you should become his enemy, since his motto is to strike first and ask questions later.

Rorik ~ The Dark Seducer. His smooth charm and power of persuasion has enticed many women to his bedchamber. Pleasure is his motto and obtaining secrets for the king. Love is simply a weakness. His heart is as frozen as the silver that graces the fur on his wolf.

Gunnar ~ The Thief. His highly praised skill in retrieving any object required by the king has left this one believer of Christ seeking penance at every holy shrine he encounters. He is the sole wolf who also refuses to acknowledge the Norse God Odin.

Steinar ~ The Pirate. Known for his exceptional battles fought at sea, this man seeks the ultimate treasure for Scotland. A prize valued by both—Norse Gods and Kings.

Bjorn ~ The Mercenary. As he secretly takes coin from another king to kill this king’s enemy, Bjorn’s ruse is to help those who have fallen under the trap of the King of England and bring them home to Scotland.

Ivar ~ The Rogue. His loyalty is questionable at times. If given a choice between obeying his leader, the king, or his wolf, this rogue would choose his beast.

Thorfinn ~ The Traitor. Given away to another family shortly after his birth, he has despised his twin, Magnar most of his life. His enemy is the King of Scotland, and the Wolves of Clan Sutherland.

Mary tell us a little more about Magnar

Known as the Barbarian, Magnar MacAlpin is a fierce ruler for those under his command. As leader of the Wolves of Clan Sutherland, his loyalty and obedience lies with Scotland. However, the king’s last demand is not something Magnar will tolerate.

After Elspeth Gunn’s brother the Chieftain of Castle Steinn is murdered, she flees with her nephew, and finds safety amongst a band of men who are rumored to be part wolf. When the king forces her to wed a heathen Northman, she fears losing her heart and soul not only to the man, but to the beast as well.

In order to restore peace to a shattered clan, Magnar and Elspeth travel a treacherous path that challenges their beliefs. When evil seeks to destroy ancient traditions, will Magnar be compelled to restrain his wolf or allow him free to protect those he loves?

A sneak peek between the pages of Magnar.

Standing abruptly, Elspeth glanced around the table. She wanted to shout at them all. Did they not understand how exhausted they were? From the moment they arrived at Lord Sutherland’s castle, they were ushered into the great hall to await the king. No food given. Only wine served. Bright red splotches covered her nephew’s cheeks.

Moving away from the table, she went to her nephew and placed a firm hand on his shoulder. “My king. If you would be so kind, I shall see Erik to his chamber.”

King William smiled. “Do not fret, Lady Elspeth. There was not much wine in his cup. I deemed it best to acknowledge his new position as chieftain with a small amount.”

Relief coursed through her, and she gave him her best smile. “Then with your consent, may I fetch him some food from the kitchens?”

The king rose from his chair. “Lord Sutherland has prepared chambers for you both.”

“Chambers in the south tower?” asked Magnar, taking a hold of her elbow.

Lord Sutherland gave him a slight nod.

Startled once again by the man’s silent movements, Elspeth remained mute, trying to control the warring emotions from the man’s touch. The heat of his fingers seared into her gown and onto her skin.

Giving the king a small smile, she permitted Magnar to usher her out of the great hall. Erik kept a steady pace with their movements as he continued to entertain their overly bold guide with yet another tale of how they escaped their home.

Her steps slowed as the torchlight danced off the giant tapestry hanging on the wall near the stairs. The eyes of a white wolf bore into Elspeth as she drew near. Though only the head of the animal was represented within the woven threads, she half expected the wolf to jump out at her.

Elite Guards. Wolves. King William.

Elspeth returned her attention to the man holding her in his grip. “I heard my brother once mention the elite guards for the king. He spoke with reverence and with fear. They are loyal to the king but had one leader—one who all of Scotland should fear because of his magic.”

The man’s eyes darkened and a smile tipped the corners of his mouth. “Your brother was wise in his account.”

Elspeth’s heart pounded fiercely within her chest. “You are the leader of the Wolves of Clan Sutherland.”

My thoughts on Magnar.

Set in 1206, this book is steeped in history and romance with a touch of shapeshifter and magic. Magnar is the first book of Mary’s new series Wolves of Clan Sutherland.   Magnar is their leader. The Clan is tasked with protecting the king and Scotland.  Bound in traditions, secrets, and magic Magnar lives for his duties until the king’s orders conflict with everything Magnar believes. Not to mention the woman who can arouse, enrage, and bewilder him all at the same time. Not a easy feat nor one for the faint of heart.

Enter beautiful but determined Elspeth with her nephew. She’ll do anything to protect the boy except… Magnar can enrage, enthrall, and bewitch her. Her feelings for this handsome brooding Scotsman are like nothing she has experienced before.

Mary has once again created fantastic characters and wonderful descriptions that will whisk you into the story where you find yourself rooting for the hero, cursing the villain, and swooning with the heroine.  I truly enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.

Interview Barbara Burke Author of Counterfeit Viscountess

Give a warm welcome tt Barbara Burke, author of Counterfeit Viscountess. Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Barbara and her Counterfeit Viscountess!  I’ve got a few questions for you.  Ready?”

Yep!

Who would you recommend this book to and what should readers be aware of before reading it?

I’d recommend Counterfeit Viscountess to someone who’s looking for a very light, quite sweet read. I don’t go behind the bedroom door – in fact, the entire conflict in this book centres on the fact that they mustn’t touch each other. As a consequence the entire romance plays out with words. If you don’t like dialogue this isn’t the book for you. Sometimes I think I should give up writing prose and just write scripts a la Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward (as if I had a drop of their talent). But I do love banter.

Who is your favorite character of all of the books you’ve written and Why?

So far my favourite character is a crusty old academic in a mystery I’m writing. He was meant to be quite off-putting but I’m loving him more and more and he’s now just delightfully eccentric. He’s also a complete page hog and is getting way more lines than he should. I also love Amanda from Recompromising Amanda. She was my first romance heroine and we never forget our first, right?

What makes you laugh out loud?

Well, this is embarrassing. When I stopped to think about it I came up with cat videos (also my own cat). They’re so serious in everything they do, how can you not laugh. Also, witty banter in books and on stage. I love me some good dialogue. Finally, and I guess this relates to the last point (and maybe the first) good conversation with friends around the dinner table.

Do you see yourself in your characters?

No, not at all. The whole point in writing fiction is to get away from the confines of your own being. My characters are imaginary creatures. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to know them in real life. I’d love to hang out with some of them. Probably because they’re way better (and more interesting) people than I could ever be. But what makes them truly different is that they never wake up at 2:00 in the morning and realise what they should have said – they manage to say it at the time. What a super power.

Speed Round

Favorite movie: To (if I was allowed more than one word I’d say To Have and Have Not)

Favorite book: impossible

Favorite color: red
Stilettos or flipflops: stilettos
Coffee or tea: am coffee, pm tea

Tell us a little about Counterfeit Viscountess.

What happens when they both start wanting a real marriage?

Practical Caroline Saxon must travel to London for the season, when all she really wants is to stay in Ireland and breed horses. But a carriage accident leaves her unchaperoned at a posting inn.

Dashing Christopher Hawking just wants a bed for the night. He didn’t expect to find it occupied by a beautiful woman or to be caught sneaking out of her room. In the light of day, a London-bound member of the ton finds them together.

Attraction flares between the two in spite of themselves. But how will they save Caroline’s reputation and calm the storm of the ton’s gossip?

How about a sneak peek between the pages of Counterfeit Viscountess?

When they were alone again and the tea distributed, Christopher and Caroline did their best to explain to Eleanor the events of the morning and the evening before.

Eleanor listened without interruption, contenting herself with the occasional raised eyebrow as her only commentary on the convoluted tale. When they had finished she turned to Christopher and remarked, “I must say, it seems quite foolish to have allowed Annabelle Winthrop of all people to discover you. She’s a complete pea goose and she won’t take kindly to Miss Saxon’s appearance on the scene. She’s been setting her cap at you forever.”

“I didn’t exactly do it on purpose,” Christopher was stung to reply.

“On purpose or not, it’s got you into a great deal of difficulty which could have been avoided if you had taken more care.”

Recognizing the signs of temper on Christopher’s face, Caroline interjected quickly. “Indeed, Lord Saxon did everything he could. If not for his quick thinking, we would have already come to ruin. You really cannot blame him for the presence of Miss Winthrop in the same inn where we were staying.”

“Nonsense, I can blame him for anything I wish. I’ve been doing it since he was a baby and very handy it’s been as well. It’s one of the only advantages of having a younger sibling.”

The fond smile she bestowed on her brother precluded any sting Caroline, less used to the ways of siblings, might have imagined such a comment implied, as did Christopher’s bland acceptance of her outrageous assertion. Though she had watched, and frequently envied, the comfortable, if often fractious, interaction between the brothers and sisters she’d played with as a child, she clearly had much to learn about family relationships when adulthood was achieved.

“However, I suppose there’s nothing we can do about it now,” Eleanor conceded, magnanimously. “But mind, Christopher, I’ll expect you to take a great deal more care the next time you break into a respectable woman’s bedroom.”

About the Author:

Barbara Burke’s peripatetic life means she’s lived everywhere from a suburban house in a small town to a funky apartment in a big city, and from an architecturally designed estate deep in the forest to a cedar shack on the edge of the ocean. Everywhere she’s gone she’s been accompanied by her husband, her animals and her books. For the last ten years she’s worked as a freelance journalist and has won several awards. She was a fan of Jane Austen long before that lady was discovered by revisionists and zombie lovers and thinks Georgette Heyer was one of the great writers of the twentieth century. She lives by the philosophy that one should never turn down the opportunity to get on a plane no matter where it’s going, but deep down inside wishes she could travel everywhere by train.
