Chat with Karilyn Bentley Author of The Shadowheart Curse.

Give a warm welcome to Karilyn Bentley author of The Shadowheart Curse, just released August 13, 2019.  I am so excited the tell you about what happened to my friend and fellow author, Karilyn.  Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about the “Call” Karilyn got and her new release The Shadowheart Curse!

Hi Tena! Thank you for having me your blog today! Before we get to the speed round questions, I’d like to tell your readers a little about how this book came about. It’s the book I got The Call for. In case anyone is unfamiliar with the term, The Call is something all authors want. The term got its name back when agents and publishers actually called the author to say that they wanted to represent or publish the author’s book.  In this case, my publisher sent me an email asking to set up a call. Intrigued, and totally clueless, I said sure. I kept wondering all day what was going on, but unlike the time my boss at the day job emailed me about wanting to talk, I wasn’t nervous. Just curious. When she called, she said that a director had asked if I could write a book based off his idea. He had this idea he wanted to turn into a movie. Actually he had ten ideas for ten different authors and I was lucky enough to be one of those authors! She went through the specifics and asked if I’d be interested. Well, duh. But I also didn’t want to jump into anything without thinking about it, so I took a day to mull over the idea. After discussing with my hubby and thinking it over, I told my publisher yes. And The Shadowheart Curse was born!

If you are interested in watching the movie being made, go to https://deadlyten.com/ and signup. You’ll get email alerts for all the movies and can pick and chose which to live stream. The movies (all ten of them!) will release on 2/14/20.

WOW, just WOW! Congratulations Karilyn! I’m going to sign up in a few seconds. On to the Speed Rounds!

Now tell us a little about The Shadowheart Curse.

Escaping New York after a client’s untimely death, medium Adrianna Sinclair flees to her family property in Italy. All she wants is to avoid ghosts, but an attractive one tempts her in ways she never knew possible.  Luca Fausto has been trapped on the Romani property for over a century for a crime he didn’t commit.  Adrianna may be the answer to breaking the curse that keeps him bound.  Standing in their way is a demonic spirit’s plan for revenge.  Will they prevail or will Luca be cursed to the shadows forever?

How about a sneak peek between the pages of The Shadowheart Curse.

As soon as they put the food on the table, a cold breeze swept through the room, ruffling her hair. Maria and Luigi’s eyes widened as they glanced at each other. Small hairs prickled her nape like fingernails scratching across her skin. The cold draft only meant one thing, and it wasn’t a blast from the air conditioner. She doubted this place even had an AC.

No, the cold air meant a pissed-off spirit raced around her room. If she tried, she could see the thing, but she’d decided to no longer interact with ghosts shortly after being released from the police interrogation room. Which meant she was no longer working as a medium.

Bam! They all jumped as one of the nightstand lamps fell onto the floor.

Yep, a seriously pissed-off spirit.

Another gust of cold air swirled through the room. She felt the clash, the fight, even though she refused to allow herself to look at the swarming specters.

Why couldn’t they leave her alone? Because spirits are attracted to mediums. She knew the reason, yet a break every once in a while would be nice. Especially when she’d sworn never to converse with one again.

She took a deep breath, marched to the nightstand, and placed the lamp upright where it belonged. At least the golden cherub remained in one piece. Cold stung her hand, residue from the entity tingling her palm. Never a good sign. Closing her eyes, she focused on centering her thoughts, on stopping the chill from traveling up her arm. Before she opened her eyes, warmth returned to the room, the cold air vanishing like it appeared, sudden and without warning.

Maria held her fingers over her gaping mouth while Luigi pressed a hand against his chest. Their pale cheeks slowly regained color. Maria recovered first, crossing herself as if that would help protect her from an angry specter hellbent on destruction.

Did they know an evil spirit inhabited the place? Or were they as surprised as she was? “Something you want to tell me?”

Another meaningful glance between the couple. Luigi shrugged. “It’s an old mill. We have ghosts.”

She raised a brow. “Those weren’t just ghosts.” Ghosts did not leave behind a cold residue that caused tingles to creep across her flesh. She rubbed her hand on her jeans, trying to wipe away the sensation.

“No?”

“No. At least one of them was demonic.”

Tell us a little about your new release Devil Forget Me.

What appears to be a simple crime, unmasks a chilling deception…

Gin Crawford, the world’s newest demon huntress, kills two minions who are breaking into a financial adviser’s office. But what she thinks of as another night in the life of a demon huntress leads to a cover-up of epic proportions. A demon haunts her employer, the Agency, and only she can stop it.

Aidan Smythe, her guardian mage and lover, along with her brother T, and the healer Eloise, join her search in discovering the demon’s identity. A search thwarted by a powerful spell.

Breaking the spell requires her to join forces with Zagan, the demon of deceit, the demon who marked her as his. But working together comes with a price. One Gin is not sure she can pay.

Excerpt: (Insert an except other that the official one – if possible – readers like something different.)

Local weather report for today: sunny with a chance of scattered minion parts.

I spin, my sword slicing off the minion’s arm. His eyes flare, round saucers in a shocked face. What did he expect? Me to roll over and stop fighting?

Fat chance, buster. Shouldn’t have hosted the demon’s essence.

Minions might be super-charged on a demon’s essence, but they still feel pain. And whacking off an arm causes pain.

While the minion grabs his bleeding stump and whimpers like a kicked dog, I pull back my sword for a fatal blow. One I should have administered instead of one-arming the minion.

A swing later and the whimpering stops, courtesy of the minion’s head rolling across the ground. Score!

“Good job.” Aidan Smythe, my guardian mage, mentor extraordinaire, and current lover, nods at the dead minion.

I draw in a deep breath, standing a little straighter. When I first became the world’s newest Justitian—or demon huntress as I like to call me and my twelve fellow sword-sisters—I sucked at killing demons. Now, I’m Gin Crawford, super-awesome demon huntress. A feat continuing to impress me.

If only my demon-killing employer was as impressed. Then again, in my book the Agency isn’t exactly known for its intelligence.

Christmas Traditions-Karily Bentley Author of Demon Lore

Happy holidays to all!  Give a big welcome to Karilyn Bentley, author of Demon Lore. Now out on audio book! Yippee!  Great Christmas gift.  Just say’n.  Have a seat and grab an insulated mug. I’ve got hot chocolate, hot cider and coffee. Choose your pot, they’re labeled. Pick your choice of a Snicker-doodle, Chocolate Chip or Peanut butter cookie from the plate. Yep, I baked them myself. Lets see what  Christmas Traditions Karilyn is sharing and a little about Demon Lore’s audiobook.  Thanks for joining us!

What makes you angry?

Injustice in the world.

Do you throw a Christmas get together?

Does inviting the whole family to go ice skating count? It started off small and now all the kids (aka my nieces and nephews) look forward to it all year along.

Favorite holiday memory

When I was a child, we didn’t have a lot of money, so we’d make “special” gifts. Like a 24 carrot necklace (get the pun??). We’d also hide the gifts, then attach yarn to them so you’d have to unwrap the ball of yarn to get to your gift (while crawling over and under other’s yarn strings). Dad would hide gifts and write funny poems telling where to find them. He’d usually write two to three poems per gift. We’d have to run around the house trying to figure out what the poem was talking about in order to find our gift.

Who is your favorite character of all of the books you’ve written and Why?

Gin Crawford, the heroine of the Demon Huntress series. She’s snarky and troubled and it was fun to watch her grow and change. Writing a snarky character was fun because she says things I wouldn’t dare. Since she’s imaginary she can get by with it. <grin>

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

I’d love to have telekinesis. That way I could move things by thinking of it. Like, sit and write while dusting. I hate dusting! <g>

SPEED ROUND FOR A LITTLE ADDED FUN: Speed Round (one word only answer): Yep, I know torture for a writer!<evil laugh>

Tell us a little about Demon Lore, narrated by Joan Kukore.

Gin Crawford has enough problems dealing with her empath abilities. Finding out she’s the world’s newest demon-slayer is the last thing she needs. Unfortunately, when she slips on a mysterious bracelet she is given no other choice. On the plus side, her new gig comes with Tall, Dark and Handsome, a mage who may or may not have her best interests at heart. Thrust into a power-play between good and evil, Gin must choose a side before she becomes the next victim in the ongoing battle.

The audio book is wonderful! I listened to a snippet of it.  I love audio books to listen to while running errands, or taking a break out in the sunroom.

A peek between the pages of A DEMON LORE. To hear a snippet of the audio book, click here.

The evil man-thing stands on my porch, his lips turning in a menacing smile of death. I don’t need to touch him to know he wants me dead. Muscles freeze, trapping my breath in my lungs. Like a rabbit in view of a wolf, I’m immobilized, waiting for death’s blow. Time slows, his gaze locks on mine, trapping me in place.

Move, move, move! My mind screams as the man’s fingers twitch.

But the spike of adrenaline explodes into my limbs too late to stop the backhand blow slamming across my jaw.

I superman it halfway across the living room. Land on the hardwood floor in a thud of pain-ridden limbs. My jaw morphs into a screaming ball of nerves. My head no sooner hits the floor than I hear the bracelet scream, a high-pitched wail quivering through my skin like vibrations from a tuning fork. The bracelet tightens around my wrist, cutting off the circulation, and then it loosens with a pop at the same time I hear the door click closed.

Ohgodohgodohgod, I’m going to die. I don’t want to die. No, no, no, no, no. Pain and terror hold me crumpled on the floor as my mind crawls backward in time.

But I’m no longer a child, fearful of fists and words, cowering on the ground.

I’m a fighter.

My head spins, but I refuse to lie on the floor waiting to be killed, so I attempt to stand. Evil Guy laughs as I ass-plant it. Laughs as a moan escapes my lips. He takes a step toward me, right arm drawn back for a hit. His fist hurls toward my face, but I manage to block it with my left arm. My right arm, the one with the bracelet, shoves forward, slamming into his chest.

His black eyes widen, mouth open in surprise, his hands fluttering to his chest before dropping. I stare at my hand, stare hard, for I’m as surprised as Evil Guy. The bracelet had become a sword, a long, thin spike of metal extending from the silver links, straight into Evil Guy’s heart.

A sword?

Definitely a sword. The flat of the blade rests against the back of my hand, cool metal heating from the warmth of my skin. Small silver links circle around my palm, lending stability to the two-foot long sword.

I’m not sure which scares me more, Evil Guy paying me a visit or the fact the bracelet performed a morphing trick.

Interview Karilyn Bentley Author of Devil Take Me

Give a warm welcome to Karilyn Bentley, author of Devil Take Me, the fourth book in her urban fantasy Demon Huntress Series, Just released January 22, 2018!

Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Karilyn and Devil Take Me.

That sounds like an ominous adventure to say the least!  Now I’ve read the series, what can we expect from Devil Take Me?

Hi Tena! Thank you for having me on Author’s Secrets today! I’m really excited about my new release, Devil Take Me. It’s the 4th book in the urban fantasy Demon Huntress series. This time a demon haunts Gin Crawford, trying to convince her it’s offering a peaceful eternal rest. Yeah, right. Never believe a demon, no matter how much you want what it offers.  Can she stop it before it kills again? Tune in to this exciting episode to find out! 🙂

I love writing Gin’s story. She’s a flawed character so I have to write her so the reader will identify with her while keeping her true to herself (which is a little bitchy). I came up with the idea for Gin and her twin T one evening while sitting on my porch. I was working on two different ideas, one of which was a crazy ER nurse who had empathic abilities (aka Gin). Her chapter was funny since I was going for a laugh. The other story line was of a boy hiding under a bed while a demon attacked. Not so funny. For whatever reason, I decided to join the two together. The original first scene in the first book (Demon Lore) of the series was cut, but the plot with the boy remained. Combining the two plots led to the Demon Huntress idea and the rest is history. The 5th book will come out later this year. Cant wait!

Now, let’s have some fun with the speed round!

A little about Devil Take Me!

A demon attack…

Reeling from a personal tragedy and abandoned by all she loves, the world’s newest demon huntress, Gin Crawford, sinks into a deep despair. She’s forced back to reality by news of a large number of people committing suicide, all on the same night. Suspecting demon involvement, Gin must work with her sexy but estranged mentor Aidan Smythe to track who, or what, is behind the deaths.

Leads to a new discovery…

As they come closer to finding the culprit, they realize their employer, the Agency, is hiding its own secret, one which threatens Gin’s very existence. New discoveries reveal that even those dedicated to eradicating evil can be bought. Can Gin and Smythe forgive each other and work together or will they fall under the demon’s thrall?

A sneak peek between the pages of Devil Take Me!

My ringing phone postpones our usual argument. I glance at the caller ID. “Hang on.”

I set my plate on the coffee table and run-walk to the kitchen, swiping the talk button.

“Hello?”

“You’re right.” The tight tone of Smythe’s voice lets me know he’s not happy about the matter. “Despite the Agency not reporting any demon appearances, the likelihood of a demon outbreak in Dallas is high. The number of suicides is abnormal. I checked.”

“Nice to talk to you too. So what are we going to do about it?” About the demon. About the suicides. About us. Pick one.

Of course he avoids the tutu-wearing elephant sitting between us, choosing the safer territory of demons. Then again, I asked about the demon and suicides, not us.

“You working tomorrow?”

“Not tomorrow. But I am the next day.”

“I’ll be at your house at seven in the morning. Be ready to go.”

With those words, he ends the call.

Not a bad start. At least he talked. More like growled. Beggars can’t be choosers, can they?
