A Glimmer of Ghosts by Hunter J. Skye

Give a warm welcome to Hunter J. Skye, author of Glimmer of Ghosts!

Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Hunter J. Skye and A Glimmer of Ghosts! But first, Hunter has shared a great guest post with us. Enjoy!

The Lady with the Fruit Hat

Someone asked me recently if I’ve had any experiences with ghosts. My immediate response was, “How much time do you have.” But it got me thinking, maybe I should write them down. I looked back at my experiences from toddler age on and was shocked at how many encounters with the otherworldly I’ve actually had. Some of them were brushes with pretty unwholesome stuff. It makes me wonder if I might have a bit of divine protection.

Not all entities out there are bad- thank goodness. I discovered that fact when was three years old. I recall that my parents had packed up the car because we were going somewhere. My brother, who is five years older than me, was already sitting in the back seat. For some reason, I had to make one last trip into the house before we set off.

I remember very clearly walking back into the house and seeing a beautiful older African-American woman with fruit on her hat. She was leaning over with her arms stretched wide waiting for a hug. She was smiling from her very soul. I can still feel the sense of love emanating from her.

I’m not sure what happened next, but I went back to the car, climbed inside, and told me parents about the “nice lady with the fruit on her hat”. They looked shocked. I learned later that my brother had mentioned a nice lady in the house when he was that age. They remembered the description he’d given of the hat she wore with fruit on it.

I don’t know if that was a ghost attached to my parents first house. We did move that year to their permanent home. Maybe I remember the event so well because it was moving day and the ghost was just trying to say goodbye. Part of me hopes that the Lady with the Fruit Hat is a wandering entity that visits all children at that age. Or, maybe she’s my spirit guide. Whatever the explanation of her existence may be, I feel blessed and glad to have that memory.

I’d love it if your visitors would leave their ghostly encounters in the comments. I like a good chill down the spine.

Hunter J. Skye is a high-functioning square peg, which turns out to be a prerequisite for writing quirky urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
Her debut novel, A Glimmer of Ghosts, has won four Romance Writers of America awards.
When not typing away on her next novel, Hunter can be found cracking nerdy jokes or waxing existential over a bowl of spaghetti.
She firmly believes this world is ready for a narcoleptic heroine.
One thing about the story:
Many of the spirits appearing in A Glimmer of Ghosts are based on actual ghost stories from the Olde Towne district of Portsmouth, Virginia. Once a year, these stories are told on the city’s annual Halloween Ghost Walk. These apparitions are well known to the residents of Olde Towne, Portsmouth and the city considers them ambassadors of a sort. One such ghost, Colonel William Crawford, founded the town three hundred years ago and is the inspiration for Grayford- Melisande’s haunting lover.
One thing about me:
In 2016 Hunter Skye was diagnosed with a rare REM sleep disorder that mimics the presence of other-worldly entities. In her search for a coping mechanism, Hunter adopted a new life plan- “when life gives you ghosts, write a ghost story.” Now that those specters are on the payroll, everyone is much happier.
Hunter has a Bachelor of the Fine Arts and has won four Romance Writers of America awards pre-publication for her debut novel, A Glimmer of Ghosts. Worldwide release is 2/19/20.

#L&SR’s #Wednesday’s Blog Challenge 1-15-20 Books I Can’t Wait To Read in 2020

Welcome to #L&SR’s #Wednesday’s Blog Challenge 1-15-20 Books I Can’t Wait to Read in 2020… Lets get started.,

In reviewing my choices, I decided to give JD Robb another try. My first book of her’s I hated. I was told my people that absolutely love her books, I’d picked one of her worst books in that series.  Figures.  So one more time I ‘ll try Golden in Death.

In the latest thriller by JD Robb, homicide detective Eve Dallas investigates a murder with a mysterious motive―and a terrifying weapon.  Release date Feb. 4, 2020.

Next up, Linda Howard’s After Sundown, release date of March 31, 2020.

Danger brings together two guarded hearts in a battle for survival in this irresistible story from New York Times best-selling authors Linda Howard and Linda Jones.

The Guardian by John Grisham. Again I loved all his novels until the last few years.  Seemed to me he was calling them in. Gray Mountain was a prime example. He spent the first six chapters rehashing what he said in the first chapter.  But I’m going to give him one more chance.

In the small Florida town of Seabrook, a young lawyer named Keith Russo was shot dead at his desk as he worked late one night. The killer left no clues. There were no witnesses, no one with a motive.

Alas, back to my writing cave where deadlines loom, so let’s see what other authors list as Books I Can’t Wait to read In 2020. L&SR

A little about CHARM ME AGAIN!

For several months a Scottish Highland Ghost has haunted Daylan, in his personal life, his professional life and at his forge. Yet, being a talented warlock, he is no closer to discovering what the ghost wants or why he chose Daylan. A trip to his estranged sister’s home in Colorado may have unforeseen consequences especially when family history leads him to a shocking discovery.

As his attraction blooms for Josie, a yoga instructor in his sister’s studio, he realizes there may be more to Josie than he can imagine. When an ancient rogue Fae Warrior set on revenge kidnaps her in an attempt to claim her as his own, a devastating curse comes to light.

Daylan’s world spirals out of control as he searches for Josie. Can he break the age old curse to save her and their future, or will she be lost to him forever?

Snippet:

She padded over to the window and opened it a crack. The fresh air on her skin was cool. It relieved the smothering feeling that came over her the minute Daylan left the room. Taking a cleansing breath, she braced her hands against the window frame and took another deep calming breath.

Moonlight flooded inside with a light breeze. There it was again, that pull. Something was drawing her outside. Warning bells went off inside her head. Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Despite her fear, the desire to go outside was overwhelming.

The security alarm started counting down and she quickly closed the window. Shit. No way out. Unless…There is was again, she had to get outside.

The powerful urge had her pickup her backpack, slip out the window, skitter cross the roof to the corner of the building and shimmy down. It was like she had no control over her own movements. Her brain screamed for control—to no avail then she was sprinting to her vehicle in the parking lot. Carefully she opened the door, climbed in, started the engine and slowly pulled out of the parking lot onto the street and floored it.

Suddenly a cold clammy hand closed around her throat. Nails dug into her neck. “Take a right here. Pull into the driveway and stop. Don’t turn around.”

Finally, self-preservation took over. Releasing the steering wheel, she clawed at the hand closing off her oxygen, and opened her mouth to scream. Nothing came out. Then everything when black.

Enraptured:The Discovery by Barbara Bretton

Happy holidays to all! Give a big welcome to Barbara Bretton, author of Enraptured: The Discovery – The Sugar Maple Chronicles, Book Seven.

Have a seat and grab an insulated mug. I’ve got hot chocolate, hot cider and coffee. Choose your pot, they’re labeled. Pick your choice of a Snicker-doodle, Chocolate Chip or Peanut butter cookie from the plate. Yep, I baked them myself. Lets see what Enraptured: The Discovery is all about.  Thanks for joining us! But first a list of Barbara’s favorite Christmas Movies. How many have you seen?

Christmas Movies
Christmas movies! Is there
anything better than curling up on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate, a
special someone, and a full slate of Christmas movies ready to take you away?
Some of them are universal favorites. Some of them are up for debate. (Die
Hard? That’s a no from me but my husband will argue the point for days!) Here
are a few of mine. I’d love to know where they rank on your list of must-watch
holiday movies.
Miracle on 34th Street – This is
a Thanksgiving evening tradition in our house. The holidays don’t start until
Kris Kringle shows up.
Holiday Inn – One look at Bing
Crosby’s farmhouse and I’m ready to pack my bags and time travel back to 1940s
Connecticut.
A Christmas Carol – The George C.
Scott version gets me every time. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve watched
this classic, I turn into a teary mess when Tiny Tim runs into Scrooge’s arms
at the end. Great from beginning to end.
White Christmas – Silly? Yes.
Sentimental. Of course. (It’s the holiday season, isn’t it?) Outdated? In many
ways. But I still love it.
Christmas in Connecticut – The
Barbara Stanwyck original version. (And who doesn’t love S. Z “Cuddles”
Sakall?)
I hope you’ll share your own
list.

Tell us a little about Enraptured: The Discovery,The Sugar Maple Chronicles,
Book Seven
Welcome to Sugar Maple – where nothing is quite the way it seems
Chloe Hobbs, knit shop owner extraordinaire and de facto mayor of the picture-postcard perfect New England town, has faced danger to her beloved home before but this time she might have met her match.
When tech billionaire Jack Whittaker crashes his small plane in the middle of the Holiday Street Fair, the town’s future is suddenly in jeopardy. Plunged into a whirlwind of magick and mystery that includes Fae warriors and flying babies, Jack discovers a secret cave where a reflecting pool offers tantalizing glimpses into both the past and the future.
With two lives hanging in the balance, Chloe is in a race against time to uncover the secrets hidden inside the cave before it’s too late.
A sneak peek between the pages of Enraptured: The DIscovery
Are you a worrier?

Since the birth of my daughter last year, I have become a world-class, gold medal-winning worrier. I worry that Laria isn’t getting enough sleep and then, when she’s snuggled down for the night, I lurk in the doorway to her room and listen for the soft sound of her breathing.  I worry that she isn’t getting enough milk. I worry about the transition to solids. I worry about childproofing our cottage. I worry about potty training and her first day of school.

Mostly I worry about what she’s going to be when she grows up. All things considered, that’s pretty silly because everyone in Sugar Maple knows that Laria’s future had been determined long before she was born.

But, then again, so was mine.

I’m Chloe Hobbs, the half-sorceress/half-human owner of Sticks & Strings, the most popular yarn shop in New England. (And maybe the entire east coast . . . not that I’m proud of it, or anything.) I’m also the de factomayor of Sugar Maple, one of those postcard-perfect towns Vermont is famous for, a picturesque throwback to simpler times.

At least, that’s what we want you to think.

The truth is, there is a lot more to our small town than meets the eye. My BFF Janice, who owns the spa across the street, is a Harvard-educated witch married to a strapping selkie. Lynette, my other BFF, is a shapeshifter. She and her husband and kids keep our local theater up and running. A werewolf and his sons operate the hardware store.

A Norwegian troll named Lilith maintains both our library and our historical society. Three generations of Fae run the Sugar Maple Inn and restaurant. Don’t laugh, but a team of vampires own the funeral home.

And that’s just for starters.

We have been hiding here in plain sight since my sorceress ancestor Aerynn fled the horrors of Salem centuries ago to found a sanctuary for other magicks like her.

I’m not bragging when I say that for over three hundred years, we’ve done a pretty good job of flying below the radar. The fact that you didn’t know about us is proof of that. Thanks to a protective charm created by Aerynn, we have been able to escape discovery even while living and working among humans. I’ll admit, however, that it was a lot easier before the Internet and drones and smartphones became part of our daily lives.

And there are a few old-timers around town who would say I was the biggest threat of all. We were already a popular stop for tourists looking to experience a trip to nostalgic, old school New England, when the runaway success of Sticks & Strings added a steady stream of knitters to our village. Now I’m not saying knitters are nosier than your average visitor, but nothing much gets by them. A dedicated knitter can sniff out a bargain three towns away and will do anything to reel that treasure in.

But knitters go home at night, something you can’t always say about relatives.

About the Author:
Barbara Bretton is the award-winning, USA Today bestselling author of fifty books. Her titles have been published in twelve languages in over twenty countries by Harlequin, Berkley, Crown, Pocket, and Free Spirit Press. When Barbara isn’t writing, she can be found knitting, reading, and cooking in New Jersey with her husband and a house filled with pets.
