Rocky Mountain National Park Destination Travel Tuesday
Glad you stopped by grab a peanut butter cookie and a mug of hot chocolate. Then take a peek at our Travel Tuesday featuring Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado one of our very favorite camping spots.
Rocky Mountain National Park in northern Colorado spans the Continental Divide and encompasses protected mountains, forests and alpine tundra. It’s known for Trail Ridge Road and the Old Fall River Road, drives that wind up majestic mountain scenery, pass tall aspen trees and rushing rivers. Trail Ridge Road is a beautiful drive, but not for the faint of heart. Sheer drop offs and hair pin turns are the norm, but well worth the drive. The Keyhole Route, a climb crossing vertical rock faces, leads up Longs Peak, the park’s tallest mountain. One of my favorite hikes In Rocky Mountain National Park, is the trail surrounding Bear Lake which offers views of the peaks, and the flora and fauna are lush and beautiful. There are benches along the lake’s trail to relax and enjoy the view. Trails leading to Emerald Lake and Mirror Lake are a little more of an exhilarated hike, but well worth it.
In the winter snow shoeing around Bear Lake and other areas is wonderful. Cross country skiing areas are also available. We went up there for a day trip for my birthday in January and had a fantastic time.
Rocky Mountain National in Colorado is one of our favorite camping destinations. The sites are primitive, meaning no electric, sewer, or water. There is water available throughout the campground just not at the sites. But still if you are prepared to dry camp, it is a beautiful serene spot. Where we usually park there is a full meadow out our front door. Great viewing of elk, moose, bear, and deer. We had an eight point bull elk wander right into our site. Quite a surprise when I opened up the front door to him standing not more than three feet from me. Our dog had an absolute fit, which in turn caused our parrot to scream a warning, but the elk didn’t seem to mind. Eventually, he went on his way.
A quick gander at my featured read this week, Mystic Maples! A great escape from the winter doldrums! While you’re here, take a look at my paranormal romance/mysteries.
Earth/Fire witch Mercy Rose’s insatiable curiosity always gets her in trouble. After a break-in at her Colorado flower shop, and a court battle that comes to a screeching halt in her favor, she arrives at Deerbourne Inn for a much-needed getaway. Looking for peace and quiet, she finds just the opposite in a startling handsome but mysterious man and his dog.
Silvanus Forrest’s gypsy/fae heritage is a double-edged sword. The land he inherited from his parents is rumored to be enchanted. But when Mercy discovers the truth, his well-ordered life unravels, and they’re catapulted into the past to right a wrong. Along the way their lives intertwine, and they discover the true meaning of family and love. Will they change the past in time to save their future?
A peek between the pages of Mystic Maples: The hook.
It was a beautiful summer evening lit by a full moon. What harm could come from simply popping over to Mystic Maples, digging my toes into the earth and see if there is any truth to the rumors? She shrugged. Sis wouldn’t have told me about it, if she hadn’t thought it worth investigating. Right?
She toed off her shoes, pulled off her socks and straightened. With a snap of her fingers she left the room without a sound and landed smack dab at the edge of the maple trees. Glancing around, she could see the house in the distance and the outline of the sign. “Good, I’m in the right place.” She wandered farther in among the trees, the dirt beneath her feet was cool. Wiggling her toes deeper into the earth, she felt the warmth of the day and something else—a connection.
Several trees had a slight glow to them, then it was gone. Am I imagining…She raised her arms out from her sides and turned her face to the starlit sky letting the magic surge through her. It had been almost a year since magic of any kind called to her. It felt so good, she was lost in the moment.
Suddenly a male voice broke through her revelry. “What are you doing here?”
Her heart thundered in her chest. She hadn’t heard a sound. Yet, there he was standing not three feet from her, hands on hips, and glaring at her.
Until next week, don’t sweat the small stuff, and remember it’s all small stuff! LOL

Steamboat Lake, Colorado Destination For Travel Tuesday
I hope your New Year is off to a fantastic start. This week Travel Tuesday takes a peek at Steamboat Lake, Colorado.
I can’t wait for warmer weather and camping/RVing. We have to make our reservations six months in advance to get spots in Colorado’s State Parks. So guess what I’ve been doing? LOL We spend most of our weekends from spring to fall traveling around in search of a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. This year I thought it’d be nice to share the places that we’ve enjoyed.
Steamboat Lake is one of the true jewels of Colorado. Steamboat Lake State Park has something special for everyone. Whatever your preference, well-deserved relaxation and recreation awaits you. We love kayaking on the lake. Especially along the no wake areas. Early morning and at dusk, you can find an amazing amount of wildlife lakeside in the deep grass or on the shore.. Blue Herons, ducks, a variety of fish, and river otters just to name a few.
Hahn’s, Peak frames the breathtaking scenery of Steamboat Lake State Park offering family fishing, camping, picnicking, trail and boat recreational opportunities. A full-service marina and swim beach provide amenities for active water play.
Several campgrounds inside the state park provide a relaxing area, and great views around the lake offering a spectacular opportunity to immerse yourself in the clean, crisp air and true Rocky Mountain living.
Winter comes alive with snowmobiling, ice fishing, and peaceful cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing in a valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Ten camper cabins down by the marina welcome adventurers for a cozy night.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this first installment of my Travel Tuesday Blog and will return week after week to see where we’ll be next. I’d love to know what you think. Please share in the comments.

A Doozy of a Vacation & Road Trip
While the vacation itself it was great, but getting there and back was the road trip from hell. AGAIN. Seems like everytime we take a vacation it turns into this kind of adventure. Never a dull moment. Well, maybe while sitting on I40.
Okay everyone runs across road construction during a road trip, but let me tell you, on Interstate 40, they take that construction to a new level. We spent one and one half hours sitting on the highway between more semi-trucks than I’ve seen in years. Yep, I-40 across New Mexico and Arizona is the trucker’s highway.
On the vacation and road trip out to Arizona the heat was a stifling 95 degrees or more, who would have expected that in September? Not us. But the night was cool when we stopped in a great campground in Gallup, New Mexico on our way to Williams, Arizona. Our friends had purchased a cabin in the area and we wanted to check it out. A good place to rest and recharge, or so we thought. The plan had been in place before COVID19 hit. We deemed the vacation trip safe, since we travel with our truck and thirty-seven foot fifth wheel, practice social distancing, and wear our masks.
KOA campground in Williams was our vacation home for six days. We traveled from there to the cabin where we played Disk (Frisbee) golf and visited. There is more to the game than throwing a Frisbee. In our younger years, hubby and I tossed a mean Frisbee. Yet the modern disks and the course was challenging to say the least. No campfire s’mores due to fire ban restrictions. But lots of fun, hot dogs, burgers, great food and good times.
Now the return trip to Colorado. We hopped back on I40 (should have known better) but it’s the fastest way through Arizona and New Mexico. Historic Route 66 is fine and we did follow that a bit while we were in Arizona. But with a Dodge diesel 3500, crew cab, long bed, towing a 38 foot trailer, it’s a bit challenging. Anyway, back to I-40 we almost made it to Albuquerque, New Mexico when all of a sudden the interstate comes to a complete halt. Again big, long semi’s surrounded us, couldn’t see a thing. After three hours, sitting still, I googled traffic on I40 and discovered a sheriff had been shot during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 40 and the interstate was subsequently shut down. After a police chase, the perpetrator was arrested. Now you don’t run into that very often, at least we never had. Finally, I40 reopened and we continued on to the KOA in Albuquerque where we spent the night. It was a nice campground.
Next morning, we continued our travels toward home hoping the last leg of the trip would be uneventful. No such luck. I had a niggling feeling that fate had other ideas. As it turned out, I was right! Somewhere between Santa Fe and Raton New Mexico, the check engine warning light blinked on informing us that the **DEF system in our 2015 diesel truck had a problem needing dealer attention and the engine would shut down in one-hundred and fifty miles. It was over two hundred miles to Colorado Springs. Yep, not going to make it. Now what????
Thank goodness for AAA. But I only had regular membership not for towing a large fifth wheel trailer and one ton truck. But the customer service could upgrade our membership over the phone, but same day expedited service was another matter. Yep, saw money rushing out of our bank account. We got all that done, with the help of my credit card. The next obstacle came in the form of finding a tow company with a heavy haul capability. AAA dispatch got right on it, but it was a few hours before they found a tow company willing and able to come out on a Sunday night with the proper equipment. Thank you Hook Towing. The tow truck driver was wonderful. When he finally arrived, we explained exactly what had happened. He was quite familiar with the DEF problem in the diesel trucks. He had an engine computer reset fix he hoped would enable us to limp truck and trailer home. Lo and behold it worked and by nearly midnight we were finally on our way again. We made it home with truck and trailer, dog, parrot and turtle. Life took off again at 5:30 A.M., Monday morning at break-neck speed. No rest for the wicked, I guess. Not that I consider us wicked, just say’n I’m damn tired of this rat race, especially when the rats are winning.
Hope you enjoyed my account of our recent road trip. Tell me about your adventures in 2020. Do you cringe at the beginning of each month wondering what new catastrophe will befall us. Or keep a smile on your face and hope for the best? Me, I’m trying to stay positive. I positively want 2020 gone. I recently saw a cartoon with the stay-puff marshmallow man (from Ghostbusters) stomping through cities. I had to laugh. Is that what’s next for us? LOL
** DEF is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to break down dangerous NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. This system is called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and can be found on 2010 and later model year trucks and many diesel pickups and SUVs. This system can be problematic. Always us high quality DEF products, since all are not the same.

The opportunity of signing on as the vet for Gwen’s sanctuary dropped into Brock Scutter’s lap after he expanded his practice to include wildlife. The personal attraction he and Gwen experience is undeniable the more their professional and personal lives collide.
Touring the only “non-haunted” house in Salem they both feel a spark of magic. A trip to his family’s cabin uncovers a heritage he didn’t know existed. If they want a future together, it means facing the consequences of awakening hidden Gypsy magic and a race against the clock to correct past wrongs.

#L&SR’s #Wednesday’s Blog Challenge – Favorite Memory – Sand Dunes
Welcome to #L&SR’s #Wednesday’s Blog Challenge 2-19-2020 My Favorite Memory & Why. Wow, had to think on that one for a bit. Has to be first my wedding day many moons ago. He is my soul mate. Next our adventure at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Please have a seat, grab a hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookie. Lets get started.,
After giving it a lot of thought, I decided that My Favorite Memory was our wedding day. On that date I married my best friend, hero, and sole mate. Next our first dry camping trip in our new to us used fifth wheel years ago. We’d chosen a full hook up campsite at a KOA Campground in Southern Colorado for our maiden voyage. New to RVing, we wanted to try out everything, make sure it worked and we knew how to use it before embarking on a big adventure. It was a three day weekend. On Saturday, we thought we had a handle on everything and decided to venture to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. No services (water, electric or sewer). No problem,, our fifth wheel was self contained. We were lucky enough to find a space in the Sand Dunes National Park for our trailer. The Park and Preserve is in southern Colorado. It’s known for huge dunes like the towering Star Dune, and for the seasonal Medano Creek and beach created at the base of the dunes. The back-country Medano Pass Primitive Road winds through a canyon toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Trails lead to forests, wetlands and alpine lakes like Medano Lake, which is home to trout and tundra wildlife.
Saturday night the clouds rolled in fast and furious. Thunder, Lighting and torrential rains beat down on our trailer. From the safety of our fifth wheel, we watched lighting streak across the sky then strike a huge pine tree across the road, turning it into a ball of fire. The couple who had pitched a tent a few yards in front of the tree, fled to the safety of their car. No on was hurt, thank goodness. The storm raged for what seemed like hours. Yes of course our dog chose this time to want to go outside. The answer was a resounding NO. Told her to hold it. About two in the morning, the storm was finally over and we opened the trailer door to take the pup for a walk. (Bless her heart she didn’t have a accident) The view outside was breathtaking. The freshly rain-washed mountain air was cool and crisp, but the star strewn Milky Way spread across the dark sky was unbelievably spectacular. I’ll never forget it. We’ve camped for twenty five years since then and never came across a view or experience quiet like that. We stood outside for a long time just taking in the scene before us.
Next morning the Park Rangers stopped at all the campsites to check on the campers. He told us that several tents had been destroyed. WOW! The normally dry Medano Creek was raging two and one-half feet high. We had to carry our dog across the raging waters to get to the Sand Dunes side that morning. Rain soaked sand is so much easier to walk in. LOL We hiked the dunes with our dog on a leash and parrot in a specially designed back pack. That was a trip to remember!
So there you have it, my favorite Memory & Why!
Alas, I must return to my writing cave where deadlines loom on a new WIP (very exciting) so let’s see what other authors list as their Favorite Memory. L&SR
